Nestled in the corner of Nevin Square, in Edgartown, you’ll find Détente. This little gem is open for its 12th season – 12 years of providing local, creative, inspiring cuisine. With a cozy outdoor patio, a great bar and two floors of intimate dining, there’s a space that caters to your mood for the night.
Owners Suzanna and Kevin Crowell (the chef) are particularly excited for this season. A couple of years ago, this dynamic couple purchased Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs. With this new endeavor, Kevin found himself divided between two kitchens, but this year that is not the case.
Kevin is in the kitchen at Détente and chef Carlos Montoya is in the kitchen at Sweet Life. For Kevin, Détente is his true love. Of course he loves Sweet Life too, but this is where his heart is.
He is feeling more inspired than ever. He has always loved working with local purveyors, and is coming up with spectacular dishes. The love is coming through.
Before officially opening for the season, there is a small window where you can check out what’s new. Of course, this is a great reason for me to get a group together, and go out to dinner.
The Spring menu is simple, thoughtfully put together, with a focus on unique flavor combinations – “inventive American fare with European influences, local seafood, hand rolled pasta and house made desserts,” and as always, Kevin has a nightly special or two to tempt you. However, the menu changes frequently, you might want to go soon.
For a starter, I had to get the Fried Cauliflower. You’ll find it under sides, but I thought it would be delicious as an appetizer and it was! I think our whole table agreed. It was a fav.
For dinner, I had the Grilled Ahi Tuna (I am such a sucker for Ahi Tuna and chances are if it’s on the menu, I am ordering it). The tuna was served with ham-hock fennel brodo , faro, roasted carrots, and Shitakes. Of course it was absolutely delicious, even the carrots were so tasty.
However, next time I go, I think I’ll will be trying Pan Crisped Vineyard Fluke — this wasn’t on the menu when I went, so I am forced to return. Shucks!
Don’t forget that Detente has an extensive wine list too. It’s always fun to pick out a bottle of something new and share with friends. Since it was a chilly May night, we opted for a Pinot Noir which was a crowd pleaser!
At The Bar
At the bar this Summer there are plans for wine specials and a new bar menu that will be coming out soon. This bar is kind of a little getaway. It’s usually quite the scene and perfect for a night out with a friend or two. After all, Détente means relaxation.
Also, don’t forget that food is half price at the bar from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.!!!! The best deal in town!
