Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks has a new addition to its team – local glass maker, Wil Sideman. You may have seen his work in galleries on the Island, or have been wowed by the glass sculptural pendants, a collection of his Buoy Chandeliers, found at Beach Road Restaurant in Vineyard Haven. In this late summer/early fall, Wil Sideman and MV Glassworks makes a great addition to our series We Love MV, our ongoing guide to rediscovering Martha’s Vineyard – We Love MV: Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks
Wil worked at Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks in the past, and recently he and owners, Andy and Susan Magdanz, have been talking about adding educational components, ways to get the community involved. However, Covid has caused a slight delay in expanding what they can offer.
WE LOVE MV: Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks Artisan Wil Sideman
“Sideman’s work is a sculptural approach to analyzing the world around him. Through glass and mixed media Sideman investigates ideas dealing with Identity, Location, Community and Time.” Wil has exhibited his work around the world. He not only creates incredible works of art, but he is also a dedicated teacher of the art of making glass. Having taught at RIT, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and at other institutes, he is now hoping to bring his love of teaching and glassmaking to Martha’s Vineyard.
WE LOVE MV: Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks Exploring The Experience
Just stopping by Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks is an experience. On the first floor, you will find a number of signature showroom pieces and on the second floor, there are one of a kind collector pieces.
You will most likely see an artist at work, making beautiful glassworks. One thing you might notice is that they are not blowing glass at this time, but are using compressed air to shape their art. Watching the magic of glassmaking is mesmerizing. It is incredible to see the process and the beauty.
The goal is to share the glassmaking process with the community. From demonstrations to classes and more with the possibility to expand. Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks is a wonderful part of the artists’ community on the Vineyard, and is definitely worth a visit.
Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks has been offering stunning handmade glass products since 1992. Owners Andy and Susan Magdanz have a passion for the art of glassmaking and Andy has been a part of the artisan glass movement since the 1970’s.
Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks is only one experience to add to your Fall on the Vineyard. Whatever you do, we hope that you have a wonderful time. It’s a Fall of new experiences, finding new favorites — enjoying the Vineyard unscripted. Reimagined. We Love MV is our ongoing series capturing the new spirit of summer and fall on Martha’s Vineyard.
