Ah Valentine’s Day, classically referred to as a “Hallmark Holiday,” a made up day to sell cards and chocolates. I am not a subscriber to this line of thought. I love Valentine’s Day, especially on Martha’s Vineyard! This holiday seems to be so much more special here.
Everyone Loves . . .
Chilmark Chocolates! And guess what, they are open this week! Nothing says you’re one of my favorites more than a box of chocolates from the iconic Chilmark Chocolates. And if the person is really special, take the time to create your own!! I love the Squibnockets, and of course the butter crunch, hint, hint.
Just Say No To Roses
To the traditional dozen of red roses with Baby’s Breath that is! This year, head to Morrice Florist where owner Emily and her team will create you the most beautiful and romantic bouquet. You can still have roses, but try the softer, more feminine Garden Roses. These roses are so soft and lovely, they’re sure to win you serious brownie points for giving something special!
Also, Morrice Florist is one of my new favorite spots for cards, not only for Valentine’s Day, but for other occasions too. Their collection has been thoughtfully curated and is really special. Be careful, you might find some other fun things to buy as well!
X’s & O’s For All
Want to have that special lady in your life, whether it’s you mom, daughter or wife, have wearable art that says I love you?
Then a trip to Driftwood Jewelry in Oak Bluffs is a good option. I love the X & O collection. You’ll find it in their front window. Not being big into hearts myself, I feel like this is a really sweet alternative!
Artist, Jennifer Cervelli’s whimsical jewelry won’t break the bank and conveys affection and whimsy! Driftwood is open Thursday – Sunday this week. Don’t forget that Driftwood is open late on Friday for a special Valentine’s Day Men’s Night from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., let your guys know!
Take Them To The Beach….
Beach Road that is! Beach Road restaurant in Vineyard Haven is opening this week, perfect timing. This great new Island restaurant offers amazing food and a great ambiance, the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion, like LOVE! Also, it would be a perfect way to spend the night with friends too!!!
Perhaps dinner at Rockfish could smooth things over? Rockfish also opens again this week. There are some fun things happening at this new Edgartown hotspot!
I know that I myself am looking forward to joining friends at the bar upstairs, enjoying a Prickly Pear. Curious as to what this is? Well you’ll just have to stop in and try one!
A Nooner
Maybe you’re not a night person. If that’s the case, brunch is a good option. The Harbor View Hotel has hosted one of the most amazing brunches on the Island for years, and since Valentine’s Day is on Sunday, this could be a perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. There’s a reason it was voted best Brunch on Martha’s Vineyard by Boston Magazine.
Mimosas, oysters, great food, a decadent way to spend a Sunday. Brunch is from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Also, Park Corner Bistro offers a good brunch, and don’t forget about Ocean View’s new brunch too!
Treats For The Sweet
If a full meal is not what you’re looking for, but maybe something sweet and special, be sure to stop in some of your favorite foodie spots. The Scottish Bakehouse is usually full of really good (possibly even good for you), love inspired goodies for this holiday. My guess is your favorite spot might too!
Take a Hike
One of the best ways to celebrate your love, whether for a sweetie, friends, pooch, or kiddos is to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the Island this time of year. It’s quiet and serene and just plain beautiful.
There are so many trails and beaches to choose from. Martha’s Vineyard has a endless supply of natural beauty.
One of my favorites is Sheriff Meadow’s Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary. You can make it as long or short as you like, which is great for the novice and the seasoned outdoors person. Also, ending up on the beach is always a great finale! Think of how wonderful it would be to profess your love or say something special along the sounds of the waves. How romantic and it’s free!
Don’t forget, you can go the movies, How to Be Single is playing this weekend at Entertainment Cinemas. You can always use a good laugh.
A home-cooked meal is always a great way to say you care. Perhaps you can get some heart cookie cutters for some extra special pancakes.
The options to celebrate those you love are endless. No matter what you choose to do, hopefully your heart is filled on this Valentine’s Day!
