Celebrating its fifth year, Not Your Sugar Mamas (NYSM) has opened its own organic cafe. Located in the Tisbury Market Place in Vineyard Haven, the cafe is right next to their sugar “factory,” where all their goods are made.
The NYSM Organic Cafe is quaint and holds some seriously good for you and yummy bites. I happened to stop by early in the morning to grab breakfast for there or to go.
When It’s Ok To Have Chocolate For Breakfast
It’s hard to not get distracted by the case with all the chocolate in it. Featuring small bites with names like “Twix” and Doughnut Holes, it’s hard to believe that you’re about to have something that is not only a sweet treat but is also good for you.
Everything in NYSM is literally good for you, made from raw, natural ingredients, even dairy free. So, even though it was before 10 a.m. I had no problem sampling a “Twix” and a Cookie Dough Truffle.
The “Twix” was made with good things like cashew butter, maple syrup, vanilla, and NYSM house-made caramel, and of course, their chocolate. It was a nice bite, not too sweet, but flavorful. I felt like I was being a little bad but wasn’t.
Since I am all about the research, I also ordered a Cookie Dough Truffle – because anything cookie dough is a good idea in my book. This too was good, even a little sweeter then my pervious bite.
I could have gotten little nibbles all morning long, but the reality was that I needed a little sustenance. So, a Super Smoothie sounded like a possibility, and I saw the Salted Caramel Smoothie ($8), and knew it had to happen.
A smoothie with cashews, vanilla, coconut oil and Himalayan sea salt for breakfast sounded good to me, and there were so many other drinks that were tempting. You can also add to your smoothie to make it even better for you – think maca, chia seeds, flax oil, hemp seeds, even bee pollen (interesting).
Erica, who has worked at NYSM for over a year now, was super helpful in my quest for healthy treats. In addition to the smoothie and chocolates, she also recommended the Chocolate Chia Seed Cookies. The chia seeds make the cookies really moist and since the cookies are double chocolate, they’re double good.
When I asked her what her favorite thing was, she didn’t hesitate. She loves the Macha Green Tea Chocolate. She can’t get enough of it. Before becoming the organic cafe manager, Erica was in production, helping make chocolate.
So she knows her stuff. I added this chocolate to my mental list for things to try next time I come in for Raspberry Dream – raspberries, banana, dates, and almond butter, sounds dreamy!
You can grab breakfast, even lunch (smoothie), and great snacks at NYSM. I think you’ll be surprised at how good NYSM treats are. Surprisingly, I was full for quite a while, not craving lunch until 1:30 p.m. Erica had mentioned that the coconut oil fills you up, and it worked. It’s “Antioxidant Rich Superfood Chocolate” readily available for you!
Don’t forget that NYSM sells Chilmark Coffee, brewed hot and fresh all day. NYSM offers a line of coffee drinks that might catch your eye, like the Espresso Shake – espresso, banana, cashews, milk, dates, and raw cacao.
You can also get the whole line of NYSM chocolate bars in addition to cookies and their original chocolate – so pure that it requires refrigeration.
So, next time you want something sweet, satisfying and really good for you, stop at the NYSM Organic Cafe! You can grab a cute trucker hat as well, to show your NYSM love.
Owners Ky Keenan and Bennett Coffey (thanks for the great pic ladies) have done so much to grow NYSM – it’s truly amazing. To see you product in so many places on the Island, like Vintage MV, Cronigs, Black Sheep, the Katama General Store, just to name a couple. Of course what’s a little cooler is that you can find NYSM all over the place off-Island including Whole Foods, and their chocolate has had a lot of media attention!
These two inspiring entrepreneurs not only make amazing chocolate that is amazingly good for you, but they live lives that reflect their superfood, eating healthy, staying active, and working hard. I still can’t believe five years has gone by already for NYSM. Congratulations ladies! Can’t wait to see what you do next year!
