The Polly Hill Arboretum is a great, family-friendly Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List adventure — any time of the year. Not only is it a very very unique place but it’s also a great experience, all rolled into one. And there’s always something new to discover.
Tucked away in West Tisbury off State Road, the 70-acre arboretum is centered around one of the oldest, historic farmsteads on Martha’s Vineyard, which eventually became the island home of the late Polly Hill and her husband.
By all accounts, Polly was a remarkable, inspiring woman, who, late in life, became a well known plant and seed expert — literally planting the seeds for what today is the Polly Hill Arboretum.

Not only is the Arboretum a living museum for trees of all kinds, but there are public gardens, workshops, scientific research, and education. Guinevere Cramer takes us on a walking discovery tour in this episode of the Vineyard Bucket List series.
While there are many exotic plants and trees that you might not plant at home, part of the Polly Hill arboretum’s mission is to develop, grow, and sell plants that do well here on Martha’s Vineyard. It’s a great gardening resource.
The Polly Hill Arboretum is open year round on Martha’s Vineyard, you can check their calendar of events here, or simply stop by and see what’s going on.
