Marie Kondo’s hit Netflix series “Tidying Up” home organization show is sweeping the nation. Her main goal is to help viewers minimize their possessions and retain items, that in her terms, “spark joy.” Home organization upgrades can also “spark joy” in the selling process of your home.
We’ve got six tips that will help “spark joy” and have the potential to increase the value of your home when you’re planning to sell.
Home Organization Upgrades: Increase Bathroom Storage
Has it been a while since you cleaned out your bathroom cabinets? If it’s been a while, don’t worry, you are not alone. Take some time, remove everything, check expiration dates. If you don’t use it, get rid of it, keeping only what you use.
If you have a vanity with drawers, be sure to do the same, and consider adding drawer organizers, keeping makeup and such in its designated space. Also, if your bathroom’s cabinets are deep, you can add rollout shelves to really maximize the space.
Walls are important too! If space allows it, try mounting open shelves for towels, etc., and if you don’t have enough space, perhaps a shelving unit over the toilet to add space.
These changes, in addition to adding value to your bathroom, can make your daily routine a little better. Did you know that on average, small bathroom remodels like these have a 102% return at resale?
Home Organization Upgrades: The Laundry Room
If you have a laundry room or area, this is the time to go through the items here, and determine whether or not you actually use them. Get rid of that lone sock or anything else no longer used that you’ve been holding on to.
Add a mix of open shelves and cabinets with doors so you have plenty of space for storing laundry supplies. If you can, a drying rack for delicates is a nice touch. Also, space for folding laundry goes a long way for buyers!
Get the Most From Your Basement or Attic
These two areas can easily become the dumping ground for all sorts of things. Step one is definitely a good purge. Don’t forget to donate items that are usable.
Just like with other spaces, adding cabinets to help utilize basement space is a great option. Give the space a feature, perhaps a media, game or craft room. By investing in this space, you will also add function for your family.
If it’s your attic that needs a refresh, consider adding a cedar closet to store clothes off season. Creating usable attic space will have you seeing green. Basement and attic renovations can net you a 60 – 70% return when it’s time to sell.
Home Organization Upgrades: Create Custom Closets
This is a tough area to tackle, but now is the perfect time to get rid of the clothes that don’t fit you, are uncomfortable, and as the saying goes — no longer “spark joy.”
Now what to do with all this space? It’s time to utilize it! Create designated spaces for hanging clothes of various sized clothing, long and short. Install shelves for folded items like sweaters and jeans, and of course, space for shoes.
You can even take it to the next level and show your accessories some love, providing homes for jewelry, hats, and handbags! Sounds dreamy doesn’t it! Well, it can be a big draw for potential home buyers, and in the meantime, your life has been made easier! The average return on custom closets is 57%.
Home Organization Upgrades: Bookcases And Cabinets
Adding built-ins to your home gives it a more high-end look in addition to providing added space to store and showcase items. Rooms look more polished, but be cautious to not go too custom because someday, someone else’s furniture may need to work in the space too.
Don’t Forget About the Garage
We’ve all seen it. What once kept your car out of the elements has become a catch all for overflow. It’s time to go though the garage and asses what is important to keep, for some there may not be a lot of things that “spark joy” in this space, but the end result from these efforts will be certain to.
What’s great about a garage is that there are all types of storage systems that can help you maximize your space, from overhead racks to workbenches, you can create a space that is not only functional but is appealing to potential buyers.
