Hope you have your santa hat ready, elf ears, even a red or green tutu because it’s almost time for the second Annual Teddy Bear Trot 5k & Walk — the Island’s very own jingle run.
The Teddy Bear Trot is part of the Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite Fundraiser, which is raising money for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club’s Happy Healthy Kids (H2K), a new initiative to address childhood hunger on the Island. To learn more about H2K, click here.
This year brings a lot of great changes to this fun event. For starters, it’s moved to the weekend of Christmas in Edgartown — the perfect weekend for holiday fun and a little exercise.
Second, we made the race a little later. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. with a Fun Run for the kiddos starting at 9:45, and the race beginning at 10:00 a.m. This way, you can even do Breakfast With Santa at the Wharf first if you like.
Third, this Teddy Bear Trot is a timed race. Joe Schroeder, from the Martha’s Vineyard High School, is donating his service for this very worthy run.
Fourth, we have some fun holiday medals and other prizes. So, I highly suggest you wear something holiday-esque and spectacular if you can!
Fifth, there is an AMAZING story surrounding this race for its second year. Kimberly Kirk, co manager of Martha’s Vineyard Hurricanes Youth Running Club, is helping organize it. Though the group is a nonprofit itself, the young runners involved are helping make the race possible as part of their community service requirements for school. Also, the group really wants to do its part to support H2K.
How great is this group of young people! Without them, I am not sure the Teddy Bear Trot would have happened. After all, we are teddy bear people, not race people. This race is such a great additon to Christmas in Edgartown — a healthy addition to a weekend of cookies and holiday merriment.
Registration is at Henry’s at the Harbor View Hotel, where you will find coffee and the great hospitality the Harbor View is known for. The race itself begins right out its front door, with the stunning Edgartown Lighthouse as the backdrop.
Runners head through town, out to Katama General Store and back, ending at the one and only Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite, Captain Collins Cottage #20. At the Teddy Bear Suite, awards will be handed out and the Harbor View Hotel will have water and hot cocoa available.
This race route is particularly beautiful, especially this time of year. We are so grateful to the Town of Edgartown and the Edgartown Police Department for making it possible, and our partners the Martha’s Vineyard Hurricanes and the Habor View Hotel.
