Craft beer, a welcoming post and beam brewery in Edgartown, Island funny man, Johnny Showtime, and trivia. Put it all together and you’ve got the makings for a fun night out.
Tuesdays in Edgartown are pretty exciting – between Dock Dances at the Memorial Wharf, and now trivia at Bad Martha, along with the great dining options still available, Tuesday night could be the new girl’s night out (or guy’s or date, you get the idea).
Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery offers a unique setting for trivia. The space is open and airy and has a relaxing vibe. The fact that there’s craft beer available too is a bonus.
On Tuesday nights, starting at 6:30 p.m. come grab a chair, a beer and relax. Trivia host, Johnny Showtime serves up a really fun round of trivia. From history to body diagrams to sports to music, it seemed as though every genre was touched.
Sometimes, it seems as though trivia nights can be really intense and even a little intimidating for us that aren’t so good at retrieving information on the fly. However, the one at Bad Martha was really chill. A couple of beers, a couple of laughs, and it’s easy to get into the game. Also, there are fun prizes for first, second and third place. Though my team did not win, I did grab a Bad Martha Sweatshirt that I love.
When there, be sure to try a couple different beers. The one that topped my list was the 508IPA – which is quickly becoming a popular brew. It’s even now available at package stores, so you can grab a 6-pack or you can also grab a growler when you’re there.
Also on tap, there is a jalapeño cucumber kolsch (similar to a lager). Not my cup of tea, but it was one of our trivia master’s favorite. The Weizenbock (a stronger version of a Hefeweizen) was very good. I like this for a summer beer. It’s lighter than my beloved hoppy IPAs and is still flavorful and complex.
Speaking of summer, have you noticed that most places have already put Oktoberfest on tap?? It’s heart breaking, but a fact of reality. I think people are ready for Fall. Bad Martha just tapped their Oktoberfest, and there’s also talk of brewer, Jacobi Reid, creating a cranberry ale.
This beer definitely peeks my interest, and will need to be sampled once on tap. It’s so nice to have local breweries that can create fresh, seasonal beers. And Bad Martha, uses a number of local ingredients in their beers. Think the beach plum beer you can find there during the summer.
When Bad Is Good
Besides these two great things, beer and trivia, you’ll also find live music on the weekends. We went last weekend to meet friends, and Mike Martin was on the patio playing the guitar and singing some great songs to sing along to.
With sweater weather coming, the patio is a great spot to cozy up and relax with friends and loved ones, have some local beers, and even get a nibble. You can get a beautiful cheese tray or charcuterie plate. There are other options too, but most of the cheeses are local, from Grey Barn, and I’ve been told the blue cheese is one of the best you’ll ever have.
Bad Martha believes in three things, great beer, getting bad, and community. While you’re “getting bad,” remember you’re doing good. The first portion of their profits goes to the Island Food Pantry. An added bonus when you’re having a beer on the Island.
