Winter on Martha’s Vineyard Provides the Perfect Opportunity to Expand Our Horizons

Martha's Vineyard Winter Calendar Of Events What To Do On The VineyardWe’re now in the second week of the 2012. I can’t help but wonder how people are doing with their New Year’s resolutions. I still see lots of people at the gym, including a lot of new people but I wonder how many people are working on strengthening their minds in addition to their bodies. You can say you’re reading more, perhaps even joined a book club, but let’s talk about challenging our minds a little more. January is the perfect time to do just that!  There are more opportunities on Martha’s Vineyard to do this than you may think.

Take a Class with ACE

Martha's Vineyard Classes Bird Watching CookingThe best resource for a new adventure for the mind this time of year is ACE, Adult and Communtiy Education of Martha’s Vineyard. The next session of classes are coming up, registration is next week, January 17 and 18 at the MVRHS. I think you’d be impressed at the range of classes offered. There’s something for everyone, from Bird Watching 101 to Learn and Play Bridge to The Art of Cake Decorating to learning Portuguese. Class schedules vary, and there’s even child are for some of the classes. Also, it’s very affordable.  Single classes start at $35 and series classes cost $135.00. Not a big financial commitment for a productive and possibly fun, enriching experience.

Featherstone: Expand Your Artistic Side

Featherstone Art Classes Martha's Vineyard ArtsMore interested in getting those creative juices flowing? Feather Stone Center for the Arts has some great options for you. One that I think would be interesting is Open Darkroom Studio, with David Welch. Who has not thought about developing their own photos. It’s actually very rewarding and challenging. I used to do it in college, but it’s been years! You could also try Basic Hand Building and Wheel Throwing to Make Household Items. You can actually learn to make your own plates, bowls and mugs. I see this as a great opportunity to get a jump on next year’s holiday gifts for my family. My mother would love something like that from me after all these years. I was never really good at arts and crafts growing up.

LeRoux at Home: New Cooking Ideas

Cooking Demos At LeRous At Home Vineyard HavenPerhaps you’re interested in being inspired by one of the Island’s culinary wizards. LeRoux at Home, in Vineyard Haven is hosting its Cooking Demos on Wednesdays, January 11- February 1, from 11am – 1pm. These demos are always educational and fun, and provide a great reason for playing a little hookie from work. You’re certain to learn a thing or two to use at home to really impress your dinner guests. I am particularly interested in Liz Kane, the talent behind the amazing Cakes by Liz. I love everything I have ever tried from her kitchen, and being pregnant, just thinking about her frosting is enough to insight a crazy craving that I have almost a month until I can remedy. I recommend getting to these events early since they are extremely popular and free!

There are many other ways to exercise you mind during these cold months when it can be hard to leave the couch.  However, I hope that these ideas inspire you to do something fun and new for yourself as 2012 continues on.
