Winter Ice Skating On Martha's Vineyard: Off-Season Fun Vineyard Bucket List

Winter on Martha’s Vineyard doesn’t look or feel anything like Martha’s Vineyard in the Summer. Gone are the crowds, and the warm beach days. It’s quieter and colder. Many will tell you it’s a peaceful time.

It is the dead of Winter, but life on the Vineyard is far from dead.

We do get some snow. It does get cold enough to the freeze some of the ponds (periodically, like Duarte’s Pond, above, in West Tisbury). But the social hub of island life in the off-season, shifts over to the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena. It’s an essential stop on our Vineyard Bucket List.

Our own Guinevere Cramer is your Winter On Ice tour guide.

Who knew life in the off-season takes so many twists and turns on Martha’s Vineyard — not to mention a few spills.

When it’s cold enough, and safe enough, Duarte’s Pond in West Tisbury is our top outdoor pick. It’s part of the Land Bank Commission’s Black Pond Reservation.

At The Arena, which is located mid-island, next door to the YMCA, the ice is alway well groomed and solid, and conditions are not subject to the weather. It’s our only indoor skating pick and by far, consistently the most fun. More information here.

The Vineyard Bucket List is our curated collection of quintessential Martha’s Vineyard. From the dead of Winter to the height of Summer, the Vineyard Bucket List explores those classic experiences and places that make this island so magical. Here’s the link to the entire Vineyard Bucket List collection.
