On Martha’s Vineyard we may not have drive-thrus but we do have food trucks. And, some of these trucks have some of the best eats on the Island. When I saw two new trucks this season, I thought it was time to do a little research, which basically gives me a reason to eat something good that I probably shouldn’t.
Spirit Shack Food Truck
Island Spirit Kayak is an anchor on State Beach by the “little bridge” in Oak Bluffs. Many people may think of kayak or paddleboard rentals when they think of Island Spirit Kayak, but let’s not forget the Spirit Shack. This whimsical food truck offers only a couple of things, but it’s got all you need.
This week, I had my first shaved ice which I got from the Spirit Shack of course. I ordered the Shark Attack because who doesn’t want cherry and blue raspberry shaved ice with Swedish Fish and a gummy shark.
It was so cold and refreshing. I get the whole shaved ice thing now. On a hot day, it cools you, and the brain freezes you get are somewhat welcomed in 90 degree temps.
If you need something more, how about grabbing a Nathan’s Hot Dog (which are my favorite) from the Spirit Shack? With some chips and a cold bevy, you’re fortified for at least another couple of hours of beach time.
If it’s a sunny summer day, you’ll find the Spirit Shack open. If owner Chick is there, be sure to stop by and say “Ahoy!”
Grape Leaf Food Truck
Also by “little bridge,” you find Grape Leaf. Here, you’ll find 3 – 4 daily lunch specials, such as a chicken BLT wrap. Most likely there will also be a couple of Greek inspired options, like a Greek Salad, or a choice of meat or spinach pies.
Wondering why the Greek themed food? The Grape Leaf food truck is owned by Nancy’s Restaurant. Like the restaurant on Oak Bluffs harbor, the Grape Leaf is offering some Greek-inspired options. It’s nice to have something a little different at the beach.
Also, you’ll find giant homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches and you can even grab a five pound bag of ice for only $3 which I think is good to know for all of us who pack a serious, well stocked, cooler for the beach.
The Shark Shack Food Truck
Now let’s take it over to “big bridge.” New this year is the Shark Shack food truck, also brought to us by Nancy’s Restaurant. Sadly no oysters on the half shell or Dirty Bananas at this one either, but you’ll find some great lunch/snack items to grab in between jumping off the bridge.
At the Shark Shack, you’ll find lobster rolls, chili dogs, and maybe some fun specials. You can also set yourself up with a litle caffeine fix with a frozen Coffee Mocha (YUM), and if that’s not a treat enough, you might want to try the Shark Shack’s chocolate covered frozen bananas.
The Art Cliff Diner Food Truck
Away from the beaches of Oak Bluffs and over to Beach Road in Vineyard Haven, you’ll find the Art Cliff Diner food truck. Celebrating its fifth year, it’s open Thursday – Sunday, starting at 5 p.m, This is one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat.
I don’t know if it’s the novelty of great food from a truck, the smiling owner, Gina and her awesome employees like Mercedes, the awesome tunes they play, or what. I am a sucker for this truck. I wish it was open seven days a week.
The shrimp taco is just plain awesome, light and flavorful, add a side of those addictive fries that have the garlic on them, and I am in heaven. Just the smell of those fries makes my stomach growl. Also not to be missed is the falafel.
For all you burger fans, don’t be scared when they say they can only cook their VH Burger (bacon, arugula, & chèvre) well done. It’s delish, and you won’t even care that it’s not cooked as you normally may like it (say medium rare). It’s so good.
As if those containers full of yumminess aren’t enough to make you smile, how about grabbing a box of Cracker Jacks, going old school here, or a whoopie pie that’s as big as your hand. Now just head to your favorite beach or back home, eat it there, eat the Art Cliff food anywhere.
Food Trucks are a trend that I love seeing represented on Martha’s Vineyard. Each one is different and has it’s own specialty. Wonder if any new ones will pop up next year? Also, does anyone know what happened to the Irie Bites food truck that was becoming a staple in Vineyard Haven with its great Jamaican food? I haven’t seen it once this year.
On a side note, writing this has totally gotten me in the mood for Ag Fair Food, hmmm West Tisbury Civic Association Firefighters burger booth! Apparently there is something about food from little places outside does it for me. Luckily, the 152nd Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair is only two weeks away.
