Oak Bluff’s Newest Sushi Restaurant, Siren, Offers Unique Sushi & More On Martha’s Vineyard

Sadly, Siren had only one season. After 2015, Siren closed its doors. Now Down Island, a fine dining restaurant, occupies the space.

According to Wikipedia, sirens (Greek mythology) “were dangerous yet beautiful creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.” In Oak Bluffs, Siren does indeed lure you into its grasp but with amazing sushi.

It’s true, Siren, located where the Dive Bar was, is a completely renovated sushi and “not so sushi” restaurant. The space is bright and open, with a large bar.

For those of us who were big Dive Bar fans, the transformation is almost unbelievable, but what’s more unbelievable is the sushi from this place.

I was lucky enough to meet one of the owners, Janet Dyer Cummings, at Siren to learn more about Oak Bluff’s newest addition to the restaurant scene.

Discovering Siren

Though I was at Siren months before while under construction, I was not prepared for how light and airy the space is now that it’s completed. Whoa – no more dungeon here. You need to see it to believe it.

Bellying up to the bar, I was happy to see a special Siren glass. It’s a light blue mermaid glass that holds the house Mai Tai. I’d order the drink just to have the glass in my hands to Instagram, but I happen to like a Mai Tai, so there was no worry.

Looking over Siren’s menu, I was impressed. The amount and variety of sushi options is extensive. I’d be so bold as to say the largest on Martha’s Vineyard.

Siren’s sushi specialist, Song, was ready to create a number of house favorites for us to dine on. I was pretty excited. I love doing chef’s choice, not knowing what’s coming.

Naruto

Song is truly an artist with his sushi preparations. Each dish that was served was more beautiful than the next, and what was even better was that the sushi was so fresh and flavorful.

Truly a feast for the eyes, we began with one of Song’s specialties – Naruto Maki – the role is made from peeled cucumber. Watching Song do this was amazing, and then fresh salmon, fresh tuna and avocado are added. It’s topped with a house tamarin sauce. The roll is light and airy and a piece of art. You don’t even miss the rice, so unnecessary with something so delicious.

We then had one of Janet’s favorites, Jalapeño Yellowtail which was made with fresh yellowtail, sliced jalapeño, fish eggs and Song’s jalapeño sauce. Oh yes, Song makes all his sauces.

You’ll find that at Siren, the need for soy sauce is a thing of the past. The house made sauces are so good, they’re all you need.

Anyhow, this one was so light too, but the jalapeño gave it a nice bit of heat. A good juxtaposition of hot and cold.

The Pink Lady at Siren Bar Martha's Vineyard Dining Out

The the Pink Lady was up next and I must declare that this is my new favorite sushi roll. First, the presentation is stunning. Next a soy wrap with a pink hue envelops lobster salad, yes salad, not just lobster, flying fish egg, crabmeat, avocado and shrimp, topped with tamarin sauce.

Yes, my friends, this is an awesome sushi roll.

I also loved the Iron Chef Roll which had tempura crabmeat, eel, avocado and lobster salad and is also wrapped in a soybean paper. This was my first experience with soybean paper and I like it, so much lighter that seaweed, and you could taste the fresh seafood more.

Does the sound of lobster not excite you? Perhaps the Candy Roll is a better option. Shrimp tempura inside, topped with spicy tuna, avocado and tempura chips. So good.

I’m on a roll here. But seriously, there are so many to choose from.

Want to add on to your rolls? You can try the Sushi Pizza, which happens to be one of the favorites of bartender, Stephanie Sharpless. It looks like a mini pizza but has avocado, spicy tuna, house made sauce and more.

It really is quite cute. Though I preferred the Amazing Salad which has yellowtail, salmon, tuna, seaweed salad and a different special sauce made by Song. A super yummy dish.

Not So Sushi

If sushi is not what you’re craving, not to worry. Siren’s chef, Kelly Jensen whips up some great “not so sushi” dishes. The Asian salad with chicken was so good. A house made honey-ginger dressing gave this healthy and hearty option great flavor.

There was a nice heat to the seasoning. Not overwhelming but flavorful. This is sure to be a hit with steak fans.

Saigon Fire Steak Special At Sire REstaurant Oak BluffsThe “not so sushi” menu is going to grow a bit. Kelly wants to also add Korean BBQ. He was stationed in Korea during his Army tour, and knows a thing or two about this popular style of food. I myself have never had Korean BBQ, so this will be a nice addition to my food repertoire.

There are a number of other things to choose from too. Something for everyone. Another great thing about Siren is that it is super kid and family friendly.

The kids menu is made up some kid staples but also includes some fun items, like Angus’ Pancakes. Janet’s son loves pancakes, so do lots of other kids. Of course, there’s also Lilly’s Hot Dog, and Mac’s Mac & Cheese.

Fried SnickersAnd for those of you with a sweet tooth, I finished my research with a fried Snickers bar. Oh yes, it was that awesome, and soon will have a little ice cream for the top.

Visiting Siren

Siren is open daily for food from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., sometimes later depending on how busy it is, and how busy upstairs is. Siren’s kitchen also provides the food for the Lampost. Don’t forget that you can do take-out too, if you’re looking for something yummy to bring to the beach. And you can even dine outside, enjoy a little people watching.

SirenSiren is a definite must for all you sushi fans on Martha’s Vineyard. I think you’re going to be impressed with what Siren is creating – art with food that’s fresh and flavorful.

Author’s note: Though not important, I thought it was funny that Siren has been so thoughtfully constructed, that there are TV’s in the men’s room. Us girls, not so lucky, but I think that’s OK.
