Menemsha is one of those magic places on Martha’s Vineyard. It’s a quaint fishing village in the northwest end of Chilmark, where it meets Vineyard Sound. There is a picturesque harbor, and a beautiful sandy, public beach.

Picnicking is a way of life in Menemsha, and especially in-season, there are several classic seafood shacks that add a lot of flavor to this quintessential experience. A few of our top picks: Larsen’s Fish Market, The Bite, The Galley, and The Back Door.

But Menemsha may be best known for its spectacular sunsets. The village faces west, and the sun sets straight across the Vineyard Sound waters, sinking into the horizon, usually with a dazzling array of color. Our own Guinevere Cramer is your “up-island” guide for on one of our favorite Vineyard Bucket List experiences.

You can enjoy Menemsha on your own, with family or friends, fishing, eating, or sunning. It’s a great place to slow down and savor life on the Vineyard.

Martha’s Vineyard is an island that’s packed with magical experiences and places that belong on everyone’s Vineyard Bucket List. To help you discover and enjoy these, we’re building a video library of our essential Bucket List experiences. You can see our Vineyard Bucket List by clicking here.
