Each Summer season I love going to the three big Island towns and checking out what’s new. With this post, I am focusing on Edgartown, and as always, there is a lot happening in this quaint, picturesque old whaling town.
Lots Brewing in Edgartown
Not that long ago, Edgartown was not necessarily the best town to visit for a great cup of coffee. That is no longer the case. This year, three coffee shops have popped up downtown, Coffee Culture, Tocco Puro, and Behind the Bookstore (btb). Yes, they do serve other things, but I have thing for coffee. I imagine the iced teas and juices they offer are fabulous too.
Tocco Puro on South Water Street is owned by Jay and Mindy Kirwin who also own Pure Touch Salon right next door. Actuually, Tocco Puro means “pure touch” in Italian. Speaking of Italian, Tocco Puro carries the most amazing Italian desserts.
The staff is friendly and the coffee is pretty good. Each cup is made individually, and be sure to take a peak at the amazing espresso machine they have.
Tocco Puro is more for coffee on the go. The space is small but well appointed. “Moloto Bene,” a very good place for a cup of joe! Also, when you’re done, you can grab a mani’pedi next store. Sounds perfect to me!
Now onto Coffee Culture. This coffee shop, located in Nevin Square is opening its doors any day now. They are just waiting for one more town approval. Coffee Culture is right next store to Vintage MV Wine & Spirits. Both owned by John Clift and Sara Webber, these two shops are elevating the drink menus on Martha’s Vineyard. I can’t wait to sit in this new, cool modern space and enjoy a coffee. Stay tuned for more details.
Last but not least, is Behind the Bookstore Coffee Bar (btb), which is on Main Street, behind Edgartown Books. For those of us who can’t get enough good, flavorful iced coffee, this is the place for you. The coffee they use is Intelligencia, and the coffee is cold brewed, steeped for 16 -18 hours.
There is lots of outdoor seating available under Sperry sails suspended from the trees. This happens to be one of my favorite and top picks for 2013. I really spill the beans on btb in Behind the Scenes of Martha’s Vineyard’s Newest Coffee Bar, Behind the Bookstore. You should try the btbama!
Wine Not Edgartown!
I’m not sure about you, but I’m in that stage in life where an adult beverage is enjoyed in a whole new way. Sipped, savored, grateful for this treat after a long day with the kids or work. With that, comes a shift in mindset about what I buy.
There have been and always will be great package stores on Martha’s Vineyard. Believe me, I am no stranger to Our Market, but now we can visit more specialized stores. There are not one but two new places to go to.
Vintage MV Wine & Spirits, located in Nevin Square, is a true wine boutique. John and Sara (from Coffee Culture above) offer an experience when you go to Vintage.
There are always wines to sample, and everything stocked on the shelves (wine and spirits) has been sampled by these two. I really like this shop because it has a lot of small batch items. There are some unique choices.
Also, John really knows and loves his wine, and is great about sharing it with you. I have totally switched my go to wine because of him! For the full story, check out Vintage MV Wine & Spirits – Martha’s Vineyard’s New Wine Boutique. Noteworthy, you can relax and enjoy the porch outside Vintage and Coffee Culture. Wine and coffee side by side — one stop shopping my friends!
Next to Entertainment Cinemas on Main Street, you’ll find the newly opened Port Supply Co., a shop that carries wine and spirits and all the things you need to create the perfect Island picnic.
Name sound a little familiar? It is actually owned by the same people who own The Port Hunter, the Courtney Brotherts. These two have an eye for design and their places have a great aesthetic. I know I’ve said this before but The Port Hunter is one of my favorite places for 2013.
Accessories Are Key in Edgartown
Now that we had our coffee, bought our wine for our dinner party, ladies it’s time to find something fabulous to wear. One of the best things about the Island is that we are a lot more laid back about what we wear. We definitely have style here, even each town has its own. Two new stores caught my eye with a little sparkle for the Summer.
On Main Street, where Petunias Shoes used to be, is a new store Sole. Clever name, this shoe and accessories store is chocked full of affordable, fun things. From scarves (I bought two), to fun and fabulous costume jewelry ( I bought 2 pairs of earrings), to shoes to clutches, there there is something for everyone here.
Owners and Sisters, Roni Hennessy and Andrea Grant, really have an eye for what people want each season and she is on the mark here. Cindy Stevenson who was there was really helpful with picking things out and she seemed just as excited as I was when it came to talking about the things I bought.
It’s all about the accessories ladies – I am taking my mom t-shirts to a whole new level with what I got here. You might have visited Sole before — there is one in Concord, MA.
From the Runway to Summer Street! On South Summer Street, you’ll find a new jewelry store, Sequin. Now this store is fun. It’s for the lady who enjoys a little sparkle, and we all do you know.
The store is bright white and full of big, bright, bold jewelry. Many of the pieces are designed with a nod to vintage jewelry, and some of the collections are inspired by travelling the world, like the Jaipur Collection.
Though it looks like it might be costly, it’s not. Once again, it’s all beautiful costume jewelry. So, you can accessorize like crazy and look like a million dollars but not break the bank. There is a coral cuff bracelet there that is a must have!
Most likely you’ve seen Sequin before. The line is carried in Neiman Marcus, can be found in Sequin stores in Chicago, Palm Beach, Newport, and more, and now the Vineyard. A cool fact, the designer for Sequin also designs jewelry for Badgley Mischka.
Noteworthy From Before this Summer
Lucky Hank’s on Main Street, down by the Stop & Shop opened last Fall, and has been delighting Islanders since the day it opened its doors. This small, intimate restaurant is not to miss this season. Dining outside in the evening is a particularly wonderful. They now serve beer and wine as well.
Not Your Sugar Mamas has opened another location. In addition to the store and chocolate factory in Vineyard Haven, chocolate geniuses, Ky & Bennett now have a location on Winter Street right next to Humphrey’s.
You can grab a delicious and healty Be Local bar! To find out more, check out Not Your Sugar Mamas, A Sweet (& Healthy) Additon to Edagartown
I don’t’ know how I missed The Scoop Shack on Dock Street. The homemade ice cream is amazing. Hello Carrot Cake Ice Cream, how have we not met before? The consistency is so creamy! Don’t forget to grab some candy too, you know what I’m talking about when you see it.
Also, Vineyard Vines is no longer in Nevin Square. It now has a new location on North Water Street. This store is absolutely beautiful.
It’s so Vineyard Vines, even the cash-wrap is cool. It’s an an old boat. If you’re wondering what happened to North Water Gallery, no worries. It’s where Claire Murray used to be.
Happy shopping, drinking and eating in! Thanks for reading On Point. I hope you enjoy these new additions to Edgartown as much as I do. Many of these stores are on Facebook where you can find out more. Also, don’t forget to “Like” Point B on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, Linked In,Pinterest and YouTube.
