Living on Martha’s Vineyard, we sometimes take the beauty that surrounds us daily for granted. Earth Day is a good time to stop and take a moment to not only help, but also enjoy nature, whether it’s the park down the block or one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Our team at Point B Realty is celebrating Earth Day this year by joining the Martha’s Vineyard Beach Clean-Up activities going on across the Island this weekend.
You’ll see us sporting our Point B Earth Day Beach Clean-Up t-shirts (above) at beaches around Edgartown on Saturday morning.
Martha’s Vineyard Beach Clean-Up Day
Saturday marks the 22nd annual Martha’s Vineyard Beach Clean-Up Day, organized by the hard-working folks at the Vineyard Conservation Society.
You might think that our beaches are relatively clean right now, since it’s been a long time since 100,000+ summer crowd was on-island, but unfortunately, that is not the case.
Just yesterday, Point B owner Wendy Harman and I, along with my son Anderson, walked along the shores of Lighthouse Beach on Edgartown Harbor.
Sadly, even near the footsteps of this icon, there was no shortage of trash.
It’s hard to believe that people are so negligent in such a beautiful place.
It’s a good time for us to be getting out there and cleaning up our beaches. After all, it’s Spring and a lot of animals use the beaches to have or raise their young there. Plastic bags and fishing line is not good for anyone or anything.
You Can Help Our Beaches
We’ll be part of the 200+ volunteers out cleaning up our beaches on Saturday morning. And the Vineyard Conservation Society makes it easy to join in.
All six Island towns will have volunteers cleaning up beaches on Saturday, April 19th, from 10 a.m. to noon. From Aquinnah’s Philbin Beach to West Tisbury’s Cedar Tree Neck to Owen Park in Vineyard Haven, 22 beaches Island-wide will be getting a little TLC. This is a family-friendly event, so everyone can join in the fun.
The more volunteers the merrier. If you’d like to help, pick your beach, grab gloves and trash bags if you want or use the ones provided by the Vineyard Conservation Society.
To celebrate everyone’s effort and cleaner beaches, people are invited to go to the Harbor View Hotel from noon to 2 p.m., where volunteers will gather to swap stories about what they’ve found and nosh on yummy sandwiches and treats.
Sounds like a win-win situation. You help beautify the Island and contribute to Earth Day celebrations that are happening world-wide, enjoy a little time outside with friends or family, and then a bite to eat at the Harbor View.
