A Little Getaway on the Cape, Anejo Mexican Bistro – Falmouth

Martha's Vineyard Getaway To Falmouth On Cape CodVacation still far away, but in the mood for a little getaway from the Island life?  Well, there’s an easy solution.  A night in Falmouth can do the trick.

Think about it  — new places to grab a bite to eat, shopping in chain stores, and being someplace different….sounds like fun doesn’t it?  Also, it could be for the day, a half of a day or for the night – whatever works with your schedule.

I have not left the Vineyard in over a month.  I think that’s some sort of record for me.  So, when I heard my friend was going off to have her car serviced, I asked her if she’d like to do a night on the town in Falmouth.

In the same boat as me, she was more than happy to have a little date night on the Cape.  She got all her errands done and agreed to pick me up at the boat at 4:30 p.m.  Whoohoo and it was even a weeknight — how indulgent!

I always forget how much I like Falmouth.  I love all the little stores on Main Street, and I think there are some great dining options all within a couple blocks of each other.  After our mani-pedis, a short trip to TJ Maxx, it was time to grab dinner before catching the 8:30 p.m boat.

Torn between Osteria La Civetta (Italian) and Anejo (Mexican) – we decided on Anejo.  I think we were both wanting something a bit more modern and fun.  We’ll do Italian next time.

Anejo Mexican Bistro Falmouth DiningParking was easy, no surprise there, after all it is Winter on the Cape too.  Luckily, there were other people with the same thought as us — so there was a good group of people in Anejo.  There’s nothing worse than being alone in a place that you’re not that familiar with.

I love the decor of Anejo — it’s Mexican and modern, and you definitely feel like you’d like to have a margarita or two upon entering.

We chose a seat by the bar, and with all the relaxing, talking, and shopping, we were famished.  Luckily, we were quickly served water, and chips with fresh made zingy salsa.  FYI — love Anejo’s guac, but I like a thicker queso dip.  Stuffing myself with these crispy little treats, it was on to drinks.

Thinking margarita, I had a change of heart immediately when I saw Breckinridge Brewery’s Agave Wheat.  Loving wheat beers, I had to get it, and it was fantastic.  A little like Blue Moon but with Agave — so it had a very interesting, delicious taste.  It was a perfect departure from Dos Equis or Corona or Modela. Yummy! Perhaps JB would carry it at Sharky’s?  I’ll have to ask him about it.

Camaron Tacos With Tempura Fried Shrimp At Anejo Mexican Bistro Cape Cod Mexican RestaurantsEnjoying drinks and feeling so relaxed and carefree, I was as happy as a clam or should I say la almeja.  Now it was on to dinner.  Since we were doing Mexican, we were in the mood for tacos, and of course, something caught my eye — the Camaron, tempura fried shrimp with Curtido (cabbage) slaw, queso anejo, and cilantro avocado mayo.  Yummy!

Though $16,  these are two tasty tacos.  Luckily, Tuesday nights are Taco Tuesdays – so buy one get one half off.  So indulge, and get a couple if you’re hungry.  I have to admit that I ate so many chips, I could only do two tacos.

Taking in every mintue of our dinner, our time went quickly. Sadly, it was time for us to leave to catch our boat, but these four hours were a perfect little getaway.  We got on the boat with full bellies, great looking nails, and some goodies from shopping.

Ending the night with a bevy on the boat, we both felt satiated and happy.  Granted it wasn’t a trip to Boston or NYC, but it was a lot of fun, and I recommend this little getaway to anyone who wants or needs a little break from the life on the Vineyard.

Perhaps it’s time for your little off-Island getaway?  Also, Anejo offers half-price apps at the bar from 4- 6.p.m during the week.

Pickle Jar kitchen FalmouthWishing you many happy little getaways — they make Winters here a lot more interesting.  And oh yes, when you’re driving through Falmouth, you’ll see that two new restaurants will be opening soon.  The Pickle Jar Kitchen, (near Anejo), and Bear in Boots Gastro Pub (where the old Roo Bar used to be), next to Parkside Market.  More places to explore on your off-Island excursions.

  1. I love hearing about Vineyarders day tripping off island and Falmouth is the perfect destination! We love being neighbors with you guys.

Anejo is a great spot in winter. In season, try Quicks Hole tacos right in Woods Hole, opposite the Landfall. Lobster and fish tacos, great salads and homemade soups including a killer chowder. Check the vibe out at http://www.QuicksHoleWickedFresh.com. Rated number one on TripAdvisor!

Hope to see you all soon!
