Yes, it’s that time again. The leaves are falling, the days are shorter, and the season is ending for a number of places. A number are closing this weekend or soon if they haven’t already. Since I love grabbing a bite to eat out on the towns, that’ll be the main focus. Check and see if any of your favs are on my list.
Oak Bluffs
Let’s start in Oak Bluffs. Though actually staying open until October 28th, Coop deVille is having it’s closing party this Saturday. This is a really fun time. Go early to eat, because chances are they’ll run out of food and stay late to play. There’s something about having the harbor all to yourself that seems decadent and makes it all the more fun.
Island newbie, Hooked is reeling in its season Friday night. Dinner and drinks – the perfect way to wrap up a hectic week and start the weekend. Perhaps have one of their signature Harvest Martinis which have a little cider, vanilla vodka, cinnamon and some other tasty ingredients, perfect for a chilly Fall night. And get in one more game of bocce ball!
Back Door Doughnuts (Martha’s Vineyard Gourmet Cafe & Bakery) will be closing the door for the last time this year on Saturday. This is another place you might want to hit early. By 7:30pm, the heavenly scent of fresh baked apple fritters and doughnuts fills the air, and when they sell out, they’re done. That’s it. Perhaps one or two more buttercrunch doughnuts are need to celebrate the Fall.
Something to perk up your spirits – the Lookout Tavern will be staying open until November 25th this year. This is a lot later than in year’s past. I feel like it usually closes around November 1st – we celebrate my husband’s birthday with a little sushi and the view every year. I guess they have some good insulation now since the reno. Yeah – I’ll be able to savor Shipyard Pumpkinhead and the spicy trio with a water view for a little longer.
Edgartown
The porch will be quiet soon at Chesca’s. If you miss this Saturday’s closing night which you know will be packed, you’ll have to wait until next year to indulge in that delicious Salted Caramel Chocolate Fudge Cake. I don’t know why I torture myself by reminding myself of such things. I am going to be thinking about that cake all day. Topped with Vanilla Bean ice cream – yum!
Today, Friday, October 19, is the last day to enjoy a meal at Among the Flowers. How much I love having breakfast there. There’s something about that open space, watching the world go by. My only hope is that someday they will have pancakes. Then it would really steal my heart.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, Detente will be staying open until the end of the month. They are definitely closed on Sundays, and I would call if you want to have dinner any night besides Friday or Saturday night just to be on the safe side.
Alchemy is not closing but FYI they are no longer open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. That seemed to happen fast this year. Not much to worry about, but it’s good to know when planning those mid-week nights out.
Vineyard Haven
Luckily for Vineyard Haven, most of its restaurants stay open. Hours may be a little shorter for some. However, the new La Cave du Grenier will be saying au revoir for the season. This actually makes me a little sad. I was hoping that I would be able to enjoy their wonderful porch this Fall. Coffee and pastry in hand, enjoying the early morning sun. I might be able to sneak in one more visit.
This weekend, Saltwater Restaurant will be closing too. Hmm what are we going to do without Josh Aronie’s amazing breakfasts and those amazing fries with the rosemary?
Some interesting news, the Island’s best and only mini-golf, Island Cove Adventures shared a little tid-bit with me. Though officially closed for the season, if the owners happen to be there working, look for a large grey SUV, you can most likely stop by for a little put-put. It takes a lot to close for the season so yuo may be able to catch them if you’re dying for one more game, but and that’s a big but – only if they’re there. Good luck.
I’m sad to see 2012 winding down. It was a big year on the Vineyard. So many changes and new, wonderful things happening. Though I’m already looking forward to next Summer, there’s still lots to do and enjoy here. Stay tuned for some fun posts about all the things we are able to do year-round. Also, let me know what else I may have missed closing this weekend. I’m sure there’s one or two things at least.
