Five Reasons Why This Is A Great Week On Martha’s Vineyard

When I was out and about yesterday, I ran into a number of friends, and everyone was talking about all the things opening this week.  Each year, I forget that the first week in April is a big opening week for a number of things with even more to follow throughout the month.  It’s nice to have the longer days and more things for us to do.  Also like many people, I feel like Easter weekend snuck up on me.  It’s seems so early this year.  I feel slightly unprepared, but there’s lots of fun things happening so I’m just going to enjoy this weekend (depending on baby’s arrival date).

Horsing Around

Now that I have a toddler, I understand the excitement of this Vineyard tradition.  On Saturday, April 7th, The Flying Horses opens for the season and will be open for school vacation week April 13 – 21 and then will be open on Sat and Sun until Memorial Day.  It’s one of those things you have to do at least once a season.  It really is fun for all ages.  I am determined to get a gold ring this year. If it doesn’t happen this weekend, definitely next weekend.

A Good Reason to Head Up-Island

On Thursday, April 5th, State Road re-opens from it’s winter hiatus.  Being closed for February and March left many us with a longing for a their fresh, inspired dinners, and of course for another place to grab breakfast on the weekends.  During the off-season and even now, it feels as though going to State Road makes for a big night out.

Nightlife Returns To Oak Bluffs

Martha's Vineyard Restaurant Bar The Lampost Oak BluffsIn Oak Bluffs, this past Sunday, April 1st, The Lampost opened for the season.  An event that starts early, at 12pm and keeps going late into the night.  You’re sure to run into lots of people that have been away for the Winter season.  It’s time for some fun live music from local favs and of course, some spinning from Island DJ’s.  This year, there have been some renos done during the off-season, including re-finished floors.  So get ready to dance!

Martha's Vineyard Restaurant Atlantic Bar & Restaurant EdgartownIn Edgartown, tonight Tuesday, April 3rd, Atlantic  opens.  With views of the harbor and bacon at the bar, who isn’t excited to have this Edgartown hotspot open?  I love that it’s opening on a Tuesday, but I am slightly jealous of my friends, who will be toasting the Spring with a glass (or two) of wine, and I have to be at home, since it’s my due date.  Something seems a little unfair here.

If You Have a Hankering for Some Homemade Ice Cream…

Ben And Bill's Chocolate Emporium Oak Bluffs Martha's VineyardYou are in luck. Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium is open for the season.  Now that we’ve all had a Blizzard or two at Dairy Queen, it’s time for some delicious homemade ice cream.  My personal favorite is the Strawberry Cheesecake – yummy!  Also, since it’s a holiday weekend, you might find that you’ll need to pick up a couple extra treats for that Easter basket, and how nice it will be to grab a little something for yourself.  Just a reminder, they have the best selection of gummies on the Island.

Lots of Fun Easter Activities for the Little Ones

Aside from all the adult fun available starting this week, it’s a weekend filled with things for kids which I never even noticed before. Another reason to love this special Island.  In almost every town, there is something to do to celebrate Easter.  On Saturday, April 7th you’ll find in Oak Bluffs, at the library, there is an Easter egg hunt that begins at 11am – sharp.  If it’s nice out (which think it will be this weekend), the hunt will be held outside.  In West Tisbury, also at the library, the Easter egg hunt starts at 10am- sharp with crafts to follow.  On Easter Sunday in Edgartown at 10:30am, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and the Harbor View Hotel invite families to participate in an Easter Egg hunt on the grounds of the hotel going down and around the Edgartown Lighthouse.  The Edgartown lighthouse will be open to enjoy as well.  Going to the top of the lighthouse is a very cool things to do.  The view is unparalleled and worth the tiny staircase.  Also on Sunday in Aquinnah, The Duck Inn will host its popular egg hunt at 1pm.  So, get those little ones ready for some good ole fashion egg hunting, and with the weather looking like it’s going to cooperate, I think there is going to be a lot of fun had!
