As the Island continues to come alive with Spring and gears up for Summer, more and more changes are happening. Vineyard Haven is really experiencing a revival of sorts.  While I was once worried about the empty store fronts, I am now hopeful and looking forward to visiting downtown a lot more.

Breakfast & Lunch on the Lagoon

Saltwater Restaurant Vineyard Haven Dining Adds Breakfast & LunchI had mentioned in February that Island favorites, Josh & Angela Aronie, were going to be opening a new eatery in the former Che’s Lounge space. Those plans have changed.  The Aronie’s are teaming up with Saltwater Restaurant, in the Tisbury Marketplace, to bring us breakfast and lunch – similar to what was available at Menemsha Cafe with the addition of a great selection of baked goods.

It has been a couple of years since Saltwater offered breakfast. Though it has become known for its dinners, I imagine that Saltwater will quickly become a hotspot during the day too.  I know that it was worth the drive to Menemsha Cafe for Josh’s breakfast, and now that he’ll be in the next town over, I am thrilled to not have to go so far.

As of now, we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the Aronie’s culinary treats at the end of this month.  On a side note, I hope they have wi-fi.  What a great spot to grab something to eat and work while enjoying the view of the lagoon.

No More Golden Dragon

Since Stop & Shop in Vineyard Haven is planning to renovate and expand, and it owns the space behind the pharmacy and where Vineyard Haven’s only Chinese food place could be found, the Golden Dragon, there have been some interesting developments.  As you may have read in the MV Times, Golden Dragon was evicted because of rent due, but it plans to open elsewhere in town.  I know not everyone like GD, but I enjoyed the occasional General Tso’s, so I’ll keep an eye out for the new location.

Where Will Midnight Farm Go?

With the old Bowl & Board space no longer an option for the iconic Midnight Farm, one cannot help but wonder where they may end up.  Perhaps the old Bramhall and Dunn space?  That’s my hope – it brings the store to Main Street, and offers a good amount of space for its eclectic collection of furniture and fashion. Stay tuned…

Just in Time for Spring

Bespoke Abode On Facebook Vineyard Haven Home Furnishings Interior Design Store MovesBespoke Abode, the store belonging to well-known Island interior designer, Liz Stivng Nichols, has moved to a larger space on Main Steet. Bespoke Abode has taken over the space where Hannah B used to be. This is a fabulous space for this home furnishings store which has some of the most amazing finds for your home, and they also carry Martha’s Vineyard Furniture Company, a line of custom Eco-friendly furniture.

I am particularly fond of their Destination collection.  Bespoke Abode will be opening this week.  I would definitely stop by, and be prepared to fall in love with a number of items.  Also, soon I will be doing a post or two dedicated to Liz, her interior design work, custom furniture, and Bespoke Abode.

Sweet Treats Coming in May

Martha's Vineyard Desserts Cupcakes Sweet E's Cupcakes Vineyard HavenSweet E’s, in the process of moving to its new home, has firmed-up an opening date, May 15. Though excited to have it open, and have even more sweet treats to offer, I wish it was open for Mother’s Day! Being that I have a weakness for cupcakes, it’s always nice to have a reason to have one. Guess I’ll just have to make a special trip on the following Tuesday.  For more info on what we can see with this new store, check out my post, Even Sweeter….Sweet E’s Cupcakes Expands In Vineyard Haven

 Scrimsaw in Vineyard Haven

Aqua Naut Scrimshaw Gallery Vineyard Haven Martha's VineyardAs I was heading to Waterside Market for a coffee and to do a little work, I noticed that next door there was a new business opening, AquaNaut, Vineyard Time and Scrimshaw.  Planned opening date is Thursday April 5th, I am interested to see what the store will feature as far as scrimshaw goes.  With Edgartown Scrimshaw Gallery no longer open, it will be nice to still have a store that features this historical maritime craft.  Currently, the windows are covered with Cronigs paper bags, and no one answered when I knocked on the door.  So, I guess we’ll have to see.

New Ways of Pampering

M V Spa Innovations Vineyard Haven Spa On FacebookThe Spa at the Mansion House is getting a new lease on life with new owner, Yvonne Dennis Stewart, and is sporting a new name, MV Spa Innovation. Though hosting a grand opening in June, changes are happening as we speak, with new paint on the walls, and some serious revamping to the space, to make it their own.

MV Spa innovation is currently open and offering a full menu of services with some incredible products including, Aveda haircare and skincare, Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup, Phytomer Sea Mineral skincare line, and many more.

Krtisty Bergantim, the spa manager shared their new message with me, “let us Relieve, Relax, and Revive you.”  Sounds good to me!  This Summer, the spa is planning to offer a full bridal package with make-up and hair, and an anniversary package for lovers needing a relaxing get away, in addition to all their other services.

More Vineyard Haven Business Updates

Apparently the space that once housed Beetlebung Coffee is going to remain vacant for a while. Currently, there is no one moving in. I will miss Beetlebung, but their new location in Menemsha is opening May 1st. It will be nice to be able to grab a caffeinated beverage for those amazing sunsets.

La Cave du Grenier is now going to open in mid-May.  Check out One Cellar I Want To Visit On Martha’s Vineyard for more details.

Centre Street is becoming a street catering to beauty, with the addition of BB Salon and Nails By Yvonne. It will be nice to have additional options for beautifying ourselves this Summer.

If you look into the windows of the old Bowl & Board building, you can see that there is work being done, and we’re still waiting to hear if Bunch of Grapes is indeed moving on in.

On a sad note, Tyler & Tallulah, the European inspired children’s boutique, is closing it’s Main Street doors.  Look for trunk shows and other opportunities for enjoying Beth Vages’ selection for fabulous children’s clothes.

Even the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce is getting a significant face lift this year!  Check out the photo below.

Stay tuned for more Vineyard Haven updates as we venture further into the Spring season, and we get to enjoy all these changes.

When I was out and about yesterday, I ran into a number of friends, and everyone was talking about all the things opening this week.  Each year, I forget that the first week in April is a big opening week for a number of things with even more to follow throughout the month.  It’s nice to have the longer days and more things for us to do.  Also like many people, I feel like Easter weekend snuck up on me.  It’s seems so early this year.  I feel slightly unprepared, but there’s lots of fun things happening so I’m just going to enjoy this weekend (depending on baby’s arrival date).

Horsing Around

Now that I have a toddler, I understand the excitement of this Vineyard tradition.  On Saturday, April 7th, The Flying Horses opens for the season and will be open for school vacation week April 13 – 21 and then will be open on Sat and Sun until Memorial Day.  It’s one of those things you have to do at least once a season.  It really is fun for all ages.  I am determined to get a gold ring this year. If it doesn’t happen this weekend, definitely next weekend.

A Good Reason to Head Up-Island

On Thursday, April 5th, State Road re-opens from it’s winter hiatus.  Being closed for February and March left many us with a longing for a their fresh, inspired dinners, and of course for another place to grab breakfast on the weekends.  During the off-season and even now, it feels as though going to State Road makes for a big night out.

Nightlife Returns To Oak Bluffs

Martha's Vineyard Restaurant Bar The Lampost Oak BluffsIn Oak Bluffs, this past Sunday, April 1st, The Lampost opened for the season.  An event that starts early, at 12pm and keeps going late into the night.  You’re sure to run into lots of people that have been away for the Winter season.  It’s time for some fun live music from local favs and of course, some spinning from Island DJ’s.  This year, there have been some renos done during the off-season, including re-finished floors.  So get ready to dance!

Martha's Vineyard Restaurant Atlantic Bar & Restaurant EdgartownIn Edgartown, tonight Tuesday, April 3rd, Atlantic  opens.  With views of the harbor and bacon at the bar, who isn’t excited to have this Edgartown hotspot open?  I love that it’s opening on a Tuesday, but I am slightly jealous of my friends, who will be toasting the Spring with a glass (or two) of wine, and I have to be at home, since it’s my due date.  Something seems a little unfair here.

If You Have a Hankering for Some Homemade Ice Cream…

Ben And Bill's Chocolate Emporium Oak Bluffs Martha's VineyardYou are in luck. Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium is open for the season.  Now that we’ve all had a Blizzard or two at Dairy Queen, it’s time for some delicious homemade ice cream.  My personal favorite is the Strawberry Cheesecake – yummy!  Also, since it’s a holiday weekend, you might find that you’ll need to pick up a couple extra treats for that Easter basket, and how nice it will be to grab a little something for yourself.  Just a reminder, they have the best selection of gummies on the Island.

Lots of Fun Easter Activities for the Little Ones

Aside from all the adult fun available starting this week, it’s a weekend filled with things for kids which I never even noticed before. Another reason to love this special Island.  In almost every town, there is something to do to celebrate Easter.  On Saturday, April 7th you’ll find in Oak Bluffs, at the library, there is an Easter egg hunt that begins at 11am – sharp.  If it’s nice out (which think it will be this weekend), the hunt will be held outside.  In West Tisbury, also at the library, the Easter egg hunt starts at 10am- sharp with crafts to follow.  On Easter Sunday in Edgartown at 10:30am, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and the Harbor View Hotel invite families to participate in an Easter Egg hunt on the grounds of the hotel going down and around the Edgartown Lighthouse.  The Edgartown lighthouse will be open to enjoy as well.  Going to the top of the lighthouse is a very cool things to do.  The view is unparalleled and worth the tiny staircase.  Also on Sunday in Aquinnah, The Duck Inn will host its popular egg hunt at 1pm.  So, get those little ones ready for some good ole fashion egg hunting, and with the weather looking like it’s going to cooperate, I think there is going to be a lot of fun had!

Thank you for reading On Point.  Let me know what your’re up to for the Easter holiday and if you’ve gotten to enjoy any of the openings happening this week.  Also, please remember to “Like” us onFacebook and “follow” us on Twitter.  I welcome any suggestions for blog topics.

Chrome MV Decal

About two months ago, I spotted a car in Oak Bluffs with a chrome Martha’s Vineyard island decal right above its bumper.  It really caught my eye, and I actually stopped to admire it.  I know that sounds like a bit much, but I have been looking for something for my car that represented Martha’s Vineyard because I love this place.

Not one for stickers, I have gone for years without anything, but I really liked this particular decal.  I thought that it would be easy enough to find.  However, I could not figure out where to get one.  I looked in stores that I thought might sell them and online but to no avail.  To make it worse, I saw a couple more vehicles with them, and my frustration was growing.

Finally last week, I recognized someone’s car with the decal that I had been coveting.  The wonderful Doris Clark had one on her Volvo.  I immediately went to her website when I got home and emailed her about the decal.  She, if anyone, would be in the know.  When she responded the next day, I was so excited.  She had gotten it at Shirley’s Hardware in Vineyard Haven, and I did not even consider Shirley’s. She had also said that if they were sold out, Debbie, who works there, might be able to help me.

So, first I called Shirley’s, and of course they were sold out. Not one to get discouraged easily, I decided to go in person and inquire. As I waited for Debbie to finish a phone call, I was getting a little nervous.  I finally found a decal for my car that I liked, and I may not be able to get it!  Ugh!

Imagine my surprise, when she told me the decals were from Tuck & Holand, right down the street.  Yes, the weathervane artist extraordinaire was the source.  I didn’t even leave the store before contacting Tony Holand to see if this was true, and low and behold it was!  He had them at his shop, and told me stop by. He had plenty of them.

Tony - proud creator

I was relieved and excited to know that I could get one (or two).  I love going into Tony’s shop.  He has the most amazing weathervanes that he has crafted on display.  Before I could get the decal, I had to take a look around and see what’s new.  I was particularly fond of the elephant weathervane which is about to make its way to its new home, The Philadelphia Zoo (my favorite zoo).

Once I finished my mini-tour, I had to know where Tony had gotten these wonderful Island decals that I had been obsessing about.  He actually had them custom made. About two years ago, he too wanted something different for his car, and could not find anything. Being inspired by other chrome decals and the island that people cut out of the Our Market/Your Market bumper stickers, he went online, and partnered with a company to make them.  They are simple, almost elegant, and look fantastic on your car!

Love it on my car!

Be prepared, it can be considered an investment piece.  They are $18 per decal, but they’re worth every dollar.  Stop on by his shop, 275 State Road in Vineyard Haven or as I found out today, they’re available at Brickman’s as well.  I put mine on my car immediately, and I LOVE it!  After all these years, I have a little Vineyard on my car, and I was able to enjoy the adventure finding it.  All the hard work is done – you now know where to get one!

Le Grenier Restaurant Vineyard Haven French Restaurant Martha's VineyardSince I first wrote about La Cave du Grenier in February, I have been extremely interested in what Chef Jean Dupon is up to for that space.  I think this is one of the changes I am most excited about for Vineyard Haven.  Even the name is clever, cave meaning cellar and grenier meaning attic.  Though a big fan of upstairs, I have a feeling that La Cave du Grenier is going to steal my heart away.

Thoughts of French Pastries

La Cave du Grenier will be opening in mid-May, and will be serving breakfast and lunch with the possibility of adding dinner as well in June. Chef Jean Dupon is well known for his French culinary delights upstairs at Le Grenier, and he’ll be bringing his signature style to the bistro as well.  Imagine the croissants that he will make for us, true French croissants, with 8 – 9 flavors to chose from, in addition to fresh baked baguettes, and his signature French Toast.  Paired with a cup of delicious coffee, I can see myself enjoying a lazy sun-soaked breakfast on the porch.  Chef Dupon is currently working on the menus that will be featured, but those items are a sneak peak into what we can expect from what will be offered for breakfast.

In a Past Life

For those of you who may have visited the bagel shop that was there before, you may remember that it was not the nicest of places.  I admit that I did go to the bagel shop a couple of times, but I usually grabbed my bagel and high-tailed it out of there.  The squishy faux grass carpet on the porch was a serious turn-off. No longer is that the case. The old space is being completely transformed.

Soaking Up The Sunshine

Le Grenier & Le Cave du Grenier Chef Jean Dupont Outside Le Cave du Grenier Vineyard HavenLet’s start with what’s happening with the outside porch which is being completely redone.  One crucial change, the stairs that were off to the left are being replaced and re-located.  The new stairs will be parallel to the front door – which makes perfect sense and will offer the opportunity for the perfect corner table space with a great view down Main Street.  There are attractive, simple lights on the ceiling, speakers for soft music to enjoy while sipping your coffee, and the colors on the walls are calming.

Soon there will be a beautiful French inspired mural on the large wall, where you used to enter the bagel shop, and flowers and plants will be added.  I don’t know about you, but I am so happy have outdoor dining space in downtown Vineyard Haven.  There is something so special about eating outside, especially during the Summer, and that space has a very relaxing feel to it now.

A French Bistro In The Making

Le Cave du Grenier Vineyard Haven French Bistro Martha's VineyardWhen you walk into the building, which is still undergoing renovations, you are immediately charmed by the new space.  The colors are engaging, the black and off-white floor is classic, and I am particularly fond of the details on the ceiling.  Though the chairs, black and beige cafe chairs, and tables, dark brown with black trim, are still en-route, you have a good sense of what to expect – a warm, welcoming Parisian bistro smelling of fresh baked bread.

When you look at the photos, it’s really easy to imagine how its going to come together.  I am looking forward to perusing the glass counter that will display all sorts of goodies, and everything, including the appliances, is brand new.  The space has an obvious personality, and I think that’s important for a place you chose to dine in.  How wonderful it is going to be for us to have our own little French bistro to enjoy.

The only unfortunate thing is that we have to wait a bit longer before we can enjoy La Cave du Grenier, but I guess May is not that far away.  One thing Chef Dupon did mention was that this space may be open year-round instead of the upstairs space, depending on how things work out. Either way, it is nice to have a new fabulous place to visit, even if it’s only breakfast and lunch to start with.  I wish Chef Dupon much success with this new endeavor.

Bunch Of Grapes Bookstore Moving In Vineyard Haven Bunch of Grapes has been Martha’s Vineyard’s year-round, independent, locally-owned  bookstore for over 40 years.  It has been a favorite to more than one president, to a large number of local and national authors, and almost every visitor and Summer resident I know has stopping by on their list of “must do’s” when they’re here.  They have a great selection of books, Crane stationary (personal favorite), and a fantastic kids section with lots of books and toys to occupy kids.   Only closing for major holidays and just having been renovated due to the fire at Cafe Moxie in 2008, you can imagine my surprise when I heard through the “grapevine” that Bunch of Grapes was looking for a new home in Vineyard Haven.

New Bunch Of Grapes Location In Vineyard Haven - Old Bowel And Board Store Martha's VineyardThere are a lot of changes happening in downtown this year.  It seems as though Vineyard Haven is experiencing quite a revitalization, and a number of those empty storefronts are going to be filled.  When Bowl and Board closed in February 2010, there was a large vacancy left on Main Street.  Two years later, there have been a number of businesses interested in that huge, corner location.

Back in February Midnight Farm, in need of a new home, was looking into the space.  Apparently this is no longer the case, as the Hall’s were also speaking with another business about the space. I was shocked to hear it was Bunch of Grapes and like many, did not believe it.  However, I have heard from a number of sources that this is the case.

I have also heard that not only will you be able to grab your favorite book there, but you’ll also be able to grab a cup of joe as well, according to another Vineyard Haven business, which would be collaborating with the bookstore.  I actually really like the idea of grabbing a coffee and reading a newly purchased book or magazine there.  The outdoor space in front of the building is just beggining to be used, and imagine the people watching that you could do there!  I had enjoyed such experiences often at Barnes and Noble when I lived in Philadelphia (a lifetime ago).

Vineyard Haven Bunch Of Grapes Bookstore On Main Street Martha's Vineyard BookstoresSo, if it is indeed true that Bunch of Grapes is moving after 40 years, it would be quite a change for Main Street.  I imagine that many long-time clients would be shocked and many will have mixed feelings about such a big change.  Though I really enjoy its current space, I adore Bunch of Grapes and think that anything they do, will only be to better the store and offer more to its customers.  So why not?

While many book stores have run into financial difficulties because of technology, Kindle, iPad, etc., and other things competing for our precious free time, Bunch of Grapes has continued to survive and do well.  They have not shied away from technology but rather have embraced it.  Though nothing can compare to walking into the iconic book store and seeing the face of your favorite staff member, through their website, blog, Facebook and Twitter, they can provide you with the same staff expertise that you get to enjoy in the store.  I think that is a welcome touch to so many impersonal on-line or off-island shopping experiences.

It’s also another way to keep you in touch with Vineyard during those long off-season months.  You can order anything onilne from their inventory and warehouse, with the option to pick it up at the store or have it shipped to you.  The best thing is that you can still find out what those trusted staff pics are, and don’t forget their diverse collection of author signed books — both of which you can’t get from some box-store or generic website.

Whether Bunch of Grapes stays in its current home or moves across the street, it will continue to be a major part of the Vineyard’s landscape.  Presidents will visit and people will find their perfect beach read, and we’ll continue to have an amazing bookstore to visit all year long.

Thank you for reading On Point.  Please remember to “Like” us onFacebook and “follow” us on Twitter.  Please note that for this post much of what I am writing about comes from what I’ve heard from people on the street.  So, please let me know if I am misinformed about anything.  Just as I was writing this, someone told me that the space was going to be a family style restaurant like Linda Jean’s.  So, I’ll keep you posted.  Also, I welcome any suggestions for On Point.

Beach Time At Lucy Vincent Beach In Chilmark For The FamilyWhat are the sure signs of Spring on Martha’s Vineyard? To some, it’s the song of the pinkletink, opening day at Dairy Queen, or the blooming of the daffodils.

Sunny & 70 Degrees At Lucy Vincent Beach In Chilmark - Second Day Of Spring On Martha's VineyardBut just one day into Spring, and already nothing says it quite like, sunny and 70° at Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark.

Lucy Vincent Beach Chilmark Today Martha's Vineyard BeachAnd yes, those are families at the beach today, with swimsuits, sunblock, sand toys, towels, and beach chairs. Actually, they said they’ve been at the beach everyday so far this week, and plan to come all week.

For Lucy Vincent Beach goers, beach conditions this year are: good sandy beach; a chiseled face returning to the cliffs; east cliff path has washed into the ocean; and the far end of Lucy Vincent Beach is closed at high tide.

New Man In The Rock Cliff Emerging At Lucy Vincent Beach ChilmarkBy the way, we stumbled upon this sunny Spring ritual as the Point B team was nearby photographing some new Chilmark vacation rental homes for this Summer. But when the weather’s this great — who can wait! We’d love to see how you’re celebrating Spring this year. Facebook us with your photos or post them here On Point.

Flowers On Martha's VineyardWith the first day of Spring, March 20th right around the corner, it’s nice to watch the Vineyard come out of its state of muted hibernation.  Though our Winter wasn’t terrible, many of us are just ready for it to be over, and there is a noted level of excitement all around.  Luckily, there are lots of things we love and love to do happening now.

Time For A Blizzard

Dairy Queen Edgartown Opening Day Ice Cream On Martha's VineyardAnd I certainly don’t mean snow!  In mid-March, the Dairy Queen in Edgartown opens, and boy is it an event that I will be so bold as to call a phenomenon.  Typically on a Wednesday, this year March 14th, at 11am, Dairy Queen opens its doors.  School just happened to have a half day, and I have to tell you that the line to get a DQ fix started at the cash register inside, and went all the way to the back parking lot.  There had to be over 100 kids in line, waiting with an excitement that could rival Christmas morning.

Of course, I had to share in this experience, so I parked across the street at Stop & Shop, That's One Heath Bar Blizzard For Guinevere Cramer walked over, and realized that I would have to come back later for my DQ.  Most adults stay away from DQ on opening day, but being 8 1/2 months pregnant, once you get it in your head that you want a Heath Bar Blizzard, you know it’s going to happen.

So, I came back when the line was a little shorter, with a friend to share in the fun, and I got my Blizzard.  I have to admit that it was absolutely delicious and I immediately regretted getting a “mini” size, should have got a medium at least.  It was actually a lot of fun to see so many kids, of all ages, enjoying a Vineyard tradition as a sign of Spring.  Lucky for us all, DQ is open everyday from 11am-9pm, and the lines will not be like they were on opening day.

Spring at Felix Neck

Spring has sprung at Felix Neck, the Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary in Edgartown.  If you haven’t been Felixe Neck Massachusetts Audubon Society Wildlife Center Martha's Vineyardto Felix Neck in a while, you should visit.  With four miles of trials through different habitats, it’s really a nice way to spend some time outdoors any season but now is special. Their daffodils are about to bloom, plants are starting to leaf out, and the barn owls have four eggs being brooded.  You can visit the Nature Center and Discovery Room where you can see the male and female barn owls on the “owl cam.”  Dad is busy keeping watch while mom keeps the eggs warm.  There are  live frogs, turtles, fish, and crabs to check out as well.

Oystercatcher Bird Photographed at Felix Neck Wildlife Sancutary On Martha's Vineyard BirdsOn one of the trails, you may be lucky enough to see a woolly bear caterpillar.  Also, there are a number of birds who have come back to their Summer home.   The  red-winged blackbirds and robins are back again, along with a number of other birds. When walking on the Sassafras Path, I couldn’t help but notice the flurry of bird activity going on around me.  Something especially exciting for bird enthusiast, the Oystercatchers have come back to our beaches, and Felix Neck was lucky enough to get a photo of a 7-day old chick, so cute!

Now that the days are longer, and the sun is shining, and bathing suit weather is right around the corner, it’s a good time to get outdoors to Felix Neck and to any number of the trails the Vineyard has to offer.  There is something so rewarding about spending time outdoors here.

The Pinkletinks Are Back

Tinklepink Spring Peeper Frog Returns To Martha's VineyardOne of the most wonderful sounds to hear as it gets dark on Martha’s Vineyard is the melodious sound of the Pinkletinks, our name for the Northern Spring Peeper, one of the smallest frog species.  Something we take for granted all Summer long, their sound is a welcomed sign of Spring.  My backyard abuts a wooded area, and the other night I had to take my dog on his final walk of the day, which is past my bedtime, but my husband was out of town for work, so there was no one else to do it.

Begrudgingly,  I walked out the door, but was delighted to hear the faint sounds of our beloved Pinkletink.  I thought I might be crazy because it seemed a little early, but I confirmed that they were back with Suzan Bellancampi, from Felix Neck  — they are indeed here already.  Just one more thing to confirm that Spring is coming.

A Sweet Treat

Chilmark Chocolates is open once again!  As of March 15th, you can swing by their up-island location form 11:30-5:30, Thursday through Sunday (closed Easter), and indulge in some of those ridiculously delicious chocolate goodies.  I usually only head to Chilmark Chocolates when I have a celebration or a holiday, and lucky for me, Easter is right around the corner.

My family, all of whom live off-island, look forward to these chocolates as part of our Easter tradition.  I love to visit the sample basket soon as I walk in, even though I know that I am going to get a number of pieces for myself.  So, it’s time for all you chocolate lovers to get in your car and make the pilgrimage to Chilmark for those pieces of homemade heaven.  I have to mention that  they will be shutting down again after Easter until April 26th, and then we’re set for the season.

With a wishy-washy Winter almost behind us, we are all hoping for a “real” Spring on the Island.  Everywhere you look, things are opening, being spruced up, and gearing up for the Summer.  Luckily, things are still slow enough that there is time to spend with friends, and enjoy the changes of this beautiful Island.

Thank you for reading On Point.  Let me know what your favorite sign of Spring is.  Also, please remember to “Like” us onFacebook and “follow” us on Twitter.  I welcome any suggestions for blog topics.

11 North Restaurant Edgartown Martha's Vineyard Dining

Future Home of 11 North

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the new Vineyard restaurant replacing David Ryan’s on North Water Street in Edgartown.  It seems as though I may have been misinformed about a couple of things, but I’m now back on the right track. The chef from Boston’s Sonsie, Bill Poirier, will not be opening the restaurant.

Instead, the new Edgartown restaurant is named 11 North (their address on North Water Street), and the new Executive Chef is our own Island favorite Michael D. Rottman (Mikey), and his Executive Sous Chef will be Al Stubbmann.  I don’t know much about Al yet, but I have sampled many of Chef Rottman’s culinary creations, you may have too, from his chefing at Sidecar or Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs, or l’étoile in Edgartown. One of his dishes that I am particularly fond of is his Lobster Mac & Cheese – the best!

Construction has been on-going for a while now, and they still have paper up in the windows, so I am yet to be able to sneak a peak.

For other Edgartown happenings, check out my recent post New Life Comes to Edgartown’s Empty Store Fronts – More Vineyard Business Changes. Stay tuned, I plan to continue to providing updates.

Thank you for reading the On Point Blog.  Please remember to “Like” us on Facebook and “follow” us on Twitter.  Please note that for this post much of what I am writing about is from what I’ve heard from people on the street.  So, please let me know if I am misinformed about anything.  I look forward to your thoughts about the changes in Edgartown, and let me know if there is more to add.  Also, I welcome any suggestions for On Point.

Pirate Jack's Burger Shack Oak Bluffs Restaurant Martha's Vineyard Dining

Who or what is Pirate Jack?  Well, it’s Pirate Jack’s Burger Shack!  Pirate Jack’s is taking over the old Oh Sun restaurant next to the Surfside Hotel on Oak Bluffs Avenue, downtown OB. Say goodbye to the tired window boxes and blah food, and say hello to Pirate Jack’s, where you’ll be able to grab a fab bite to eat and some grog (an alcoholic drink), all while enjoying the water and downtown views.

The home of Pirate Jack's

Ed Charter, founder of Arrowhead Homes, is the man behind Pirate Jack’s.  He believes that he will be able to break the curse of that particular location which has been a deathtrap for other restaurants.  His secret?  Fun and delicious, high quality, affordable food.

Pirate Jack’s will be a pirate-themed restaurant.  Think of waitstaff in puffy shirts, pirate flags flying, and a the opportunity to buy pirate hats and swords, great for swashbuckling adventures down Circuit Avenue.  Just thinking about it all makes me smile.  The building even looks like an old ship.  All it needs are some cannons below the windows and a figurehead of a beautful woman at the bow.

But make no mistake, though the theme is lighthearted and fun, the food is no laughing matter.  We’re talking about burgers made from fresh, daily ground beef, fresh cut fries, Ed’s special fried chicken (influenced by his love of New Orleans), and mouthwatering breakfast.  The menu is going to be fresh and simple, and geared towards take-out, but there will be counter seating, so you’ll be able to can enjoy a burger and beer, and take in the atmosphere and the views Pirate Jack’s has to offer.

Half the battle for a restaurant is location, and Pirate Jack’s has a great one.  Think about how easy it will be to grab some grub and head to the beach or Ocean Park.  Arrr…..it will be great to have a new option for doing just that, and if the food is as good as Ed says, we’ll all be singing Pirate Jack’s praises.

One of the aspects behind the motivation to open Pirate Jack’s Burger Shack is that it is a collaboration between Ed and his son Seth, who really enjoys the restaurant business.  What a fantastic way to create a legacy as a family, and you know they’ll never run out of things to talk about.  Also, the Charter boys want to offer Islanders and visitors a great place to be able to enjoy a bite to eat  year-round, which is the goal.

You may chuckle a bit at all of this because of the pirate theme, but think about it…..how much fun will it be for families and affordable to boot?  Also, it’s across the street from the famous Flying Horses, and a skull and cross-bone flag flying from the building would be certain to draw people from the ferry terminal.  After all, we are on an island, and who doesn’t love a pirate?  So get ready landlubbers to enjoy Pirate Jack’s Burger Shack, opening April 2012.

On a side note, National Talk Like A Pirate Day is my birthday, September 19th!
